SparkPulse is owned and operated by 2800977 Alberta Inc., based in Blackfalds, Alberta, Canada. This privacy policy describes how the SparkPulse iOS app and sparkpulse.ca website collect, use, and protect your information. We follow Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).
Our operating principle: your nutrition and activity data is yours. We store it on your device by default, we don't sell it, and we don't run ad networks inside the iOS app.
What We Collect And Where It Lives
Locally on your device (never uploaded to SparkPulse servers):
- Food log entries, meal records, nutrition summaries
- Activity logs, activity entries, fitness progress records
- App settings and preferences (units, goals, theme)
- Pro upgrade status, feature preferences
- Progress photos you choose to capture
Processed by third parties (only when you use a specific feature):
- Pages viewed and feature interactions — Google Analytics (GA4), anonymous and aggregated
- In-app subscription entitlements — RevenueCat (anonymous subscription identifier only, for App Store purchases)
- Meal photo nutrition estimation — Passio Nutrition AI (only when you log a meal by photo)
- Barcode lookups — handled locally; only the numeric barcode is read
Provided voluntarily:
- Name and email (only if you contact us directly at support@sparkpulse.ca)
Camera And Meal Photo Analysis
The iOS app uses your device camera for three purposes:
- Barcode scanning — only the numeric barcode value is processed. No image data is captured, stored, or transmitted.
- Progress photos — captured photos stay on your device. They are never uploaded to SparkPulse servers and are not shared with any third party.
- Meal photo AI analysis — when you choose to log a meal by photo, the image is transmitted to Passio Nutrition AI for nutritional estimation. Meal photos are not retained after analysis. You can opt out by using manual food entry or barcode scanning instead.
You can revoke camera access at any time through iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera → SparkPulse.
Apple Health Data
SparkPulse can optionally integrate with Apple Health (HealthKit) on iOS to:
- Read your daily steps, active minutes, and workouts so they appear in your activity rings.
- Write nutrition entries (calories, macros) and activity entries so your data stays in sync across apps.
Apple Health data stays on your device and is governed by Apple's own privacy controls. SparkPulse does not transmit HealthKit data to any server. The integration is fully optional and reversible at any time through iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Health → SparkPulse.
In accordance with Apple's HealthKit terms, SparkPulse does not use HealthKit data for advertising, marketing, or sale to third parties.
Third-Party AI Service Disclosure (Passio Inc.)
Who the data is sent to: Passio Inc., a third-party artificial intelligence company headquartered in the United States (https://www.passio.ai).
What data is sent: only the single food photo you choose to capture or upload when you tap "AI Food Scan". No name, email address, account identifier, device identifier, IP-based location, or other personal data is included in the request.
How the data is collected: the photo is captured locally on your device via the camera or photo library. The image is resized on-device, base64-encoded, and transmitted over HTTPS only when the "AI Food Scan" consent flag is set to "granted".
All uses of the data: Passio Inc. uses the photo solely to return an identified food name and nutrition estimate. Passio does not retain the photo after analysis, does not use it to train machine-learning models, and does not link it to your identity.
User permission before sharing: SparkPulse requests your explicit consent before any photo is transmitted. A first-launch disclosure card names Passio Inc. and lists the data flow. A second consent modal appears the first time you tap "AI Food Scan", requiring an explicit "Allow AI Food Scan" tap. You can revoke consent any time at Menu → Settings → Privacy → "AI Food Scan (Passio)".
Equal protection: Passio Inc. provides data protection equal to or greater than that required by Apple's App Store Review Guidelines section 5.1.1(i). Passio's privacy practices are documented at https://www.passio.ai/privacy-policy.
Optional feature: AI Food Scan is fully optional. SparkPulse is usable end-to-end via manual food entry, on-device barcode scanning, and food-database lookup (CNF / USDA / Open Food Facts) without ever invoking Passio.
Third-Party Services
| Service | Purpose | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| RevenueCat | Manages in-app subscription receipts and entitlements for App Store purchases | iOS users who purchase a subscription in the app |
| Passio Nutrition AI | Identifies food items from meal photos | When you log a meal by photo |
| Google Analytics (GA4) | Anonymous, aggregated usage measurement | All users |
| Apple Health (HealthKit) | Two-way sync of activity and nutrition | iOS users who choose to enable it |
The iOS app processes in-app purchases through Apple's App Store. Subscription receipts and entitlements are managed by RevenueCat, which receives anonymous subscription identifiers (not personal data). Manage your subscriptions in iOS Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions.
